There’s a big hubbub in the US over the leaked Mitt Romney tape from a private fundraiser earlier this year, where he disparages 47% of the US people who support Obama as being dependent on handouts, etc. He’ taking yet more flak over it.

Personally, I think it’s good this was released. Now, everyone sees Romney for what he is and how he would act if President, (not just wondering what he’d be like, since he’s tried to be as opaque and shape-shifter like as possible) and it will give the far-right wingers – who’ve all been applauding this by the way and agreeing with it-, a chance to see if a majority of people really agree with that view; as they seem to think is the case in their own minds.

  • I hate to sound like an elitist prick, and I know what I’m about to say is going to make me sound like one, but… do you think people really care?

It’s an honest question, because I’m not sure. I mean, anyone who knows anything about the Mitt Romney campaign by now surely knows that he and his vice president are ostensibly committed to market over state, and this is hardly the most offensive statement about either dependency on government or about big-government left that I’ve heard come out of Republican mouths even just recently.

A substantial proportion of the Tea Party folks are lower or lower-middle class, rely on government assistance (particularly if they are retired), and yet are openly hostile in principle to government assistance because it creates dependency. We already know that outside of the upper-class not many Americans or Canadians actually vote in their own economic self-interest. I have to think the reality is that while a lot of people may be teed off by these remarks, relatively few would actually switch their vote over it.

    But I guess we’ll see.
