In brief, I don’t know whether allowing Globalive into Canada to offer cellphone service is the right move or not, but when the big cellphone companies engage in stunts like this with their customers, and engaging in what I call “fine-print” tactics, they aren’t winning themselves any fans or generating any sympathy to their cause or about their so-called plight.
@sassy, What do you think about the entrance of Wind to the marketplace? Do you like their offerings in comparison to Bell, Telus and Rogers?
In 2001 I launched Canada’s first “calculator” or rate plan comparison tool. (shameless plug) You can find it at http://www.cellphones.ca. At this point the tool only offers the ability to filter and compare the plans side-by-side but in the near future we will also be launching something we’ve been working on for the past year that makes recommendations based on your specific usage. I hope you’ll check it out.
I don’t even use a cell phone for the reasons you give. CBC Radio interviewed the people who run this site today. It looks like it might be useful for someone shoppig around for the most suitable plan for them. But what do I know, I have never had to shop around 🙂

@sassy,
Thanks for the tip
I am with Scott 100%, and so are 90% (my guess) of Canadians.
We are being gouged by the big three. My relatives in Europe pay half what I pay. Israeli’s pay a fraction of what we pay.
I have no use for the Paul Hellyer,Maude Barlow, David Orchard type nationalists with Smoot-Hawley thinking.
Where would RIM be without free trade.
More importantly is the fact of how this breaks the door down on “Canadian Control”. Asper’s ponzi scheme all of a sudden has the path cleared for a takeover by…oh, I don’t know…an Aussie scum bag, perchance.
