Is Governor-General Jean politely telling Harper and the PMO to get over their insecurity?

Look at this announcement released by Rideau Hall today (H/T Kady O’Malley):

Their Excellencies the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada.. will welcome The Honourable Barack H. Obama, President of the United States of America, on Thursday, February 19, 2009, at 10:30 a.m., at the Ottawa International Airport. The Governor General will then meet with President Obama.

Remember, the PMO said yesterday there would be no TV cameras or other audio equipment or even reporters present at Jean and Obama’s meeting. Perhaps her Excellency the GG – the formal head of state of Canada – doesn’t appreciate the secretive egomaniacs down at the PMO telling her that she can’t have press there covering the event.

As Kady says, “This isn’t going to turn into a showdown between PMO and Rideau Hall, is it? Because — actually, come to think of it, at this point, bring it on.”

I think it would be extremely amusing to see the PMO (headed by humourless hack Kory Teynecke) and by extension Harper get some comeuppance from Jean over their paranoia and attempted manipulation of this event.

  • Hide the dead soldiers. Actually, Harper tried when the dead soldiers started being brought back from Afghanistan.

Word circulated that this was a working visit and not a state visit. Perhaps Harper’s aversion to the G-G is what prompted the original statement from the PMO.

Since the G-G outranks the PM, I’m glad she’s jumping in ahead of Harper and getting her greeting in first.

After all, Harper has no use for the G-G. He has no use for women. He has no use for anyone not in his circle.

Chubby man and a petty mind.

If she shows up with the media in tow, do you think Harper will stamp his feet, pack up his toys and go home?

The lady is not to be trifled with…least of all by small, small minds.
