Just the facts

I don’t know why this is even necessary to keep saying, but since we have such a right-wing and global warming denalist noise machine out there, I guess we’ll have to;  climate change is happening and real, whether its snowing a lot in Victoria and Vancouver or not,  and climate change is backed by scientific data:

According to NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies, the 2008 meteorological year (December 2007 through November 2008) “was the ninth warmest year in the period of instrumental measurements, which extends back to 1880. The nine warmest years all occur within the eleven-year period 1998-2008.” (GISS further states that “given our estimated error … we can only say that 2008 probably ranks as somewhere between the 7th and 12th warmest year.) Moreover, the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s (IPCC) 2007 “Synthesis Reportconcluded that “[w]arming of the climate system is unequivocal, as is now evident from observations of increases in global average air and ocean temperatures, widespread melting of snow and ice and rising global average sea level.”

I brought that little quotation up because we have a lot of people spouting off about how “global cooling” is now occurring. That wouldn’t appear to be the case so far.. and those same people who poo-poo any short term weather effects as being evidence of global warming should be taking their own advice when it comes to pushing “global cooling” as being out there due to snowstorms in unusual places.

Furthermore, climate change is not occurring due to sunspots or some other natural phenomena as the supporters of Big Oil and doing nothing would try to have the public believe:

…the IPCC report noted that “[t]he observed widespread warming of the atmosphere and ocean, together with ice mass loss, support the conclusion that it is extremely unlikely [less than a 5 percent chance] that global climate change of the past 50 years can be explained without external forcing and very likely that it is not due to known natural causes alone.” The IPCC report further determined that “[m]ost of the observed increase in global average temperatures since the mid-20th century is very likely [defined in the report as a greater than 90 percent chance] due to the observed increase in anthropogenic [human-caused] GHG [greenhouse gas] concentrations.” The IPCC’s February 2007 Working Group I Report “The Physical Science Basis” similarly concluded that since 1750, “it is extremely likely [greater than a 95 percent chance] that humans have exerted a substantial warming influence on climate.”

Just a further thought to that and expanding on what I said earlier, looking at what the weather is doing NOW in a single year is no way to determine if climate change is happening or not –  long term averages are what count:

…as The New York Times reported on March 2, climate scientists — including at least one who has disputed aspects of the scientific consensus on global warming — completely reject the notion that short-term changes in weather, let alone individual storms, bear any relevance to the global warming debate:

Many scientists also say that the cool spell (happening at the time – ed) in no way undermines the enormous body of evidence pointing to a warming world with disrupted weather patterns, less ice and rising seas should heat-trapping greenhouse gases from burning fossil fuels and forests continue to accumulate in the air.

”The current downturn is not very unusual,” said Carl Mears, a scientist at Remote Sensing Systems, a private research group in Santa Rosa, Calif., that has been using satellite data to track global temperature and whose findings have been held out as reliable by a variety of climate experts. He pointed to similar drops in 1988, 1991-92, and 1998, but with a long-term warming trend clear nonetheless.

Remember that next time you hear some commentator sniffing about Vancouver and Victoria having a lot of snow as “evidence” that global warming or climate change does not exist.

if you are going to put a link up and start quoting then do it verbatum..not just what suits your lefty agenda but it is your blog so you can do what you want.

    here let me help
The meteorological year, December 2007 through November 2008, was the coolest year since 2000, according to the Goddard Institute for Space Studies analysis of surface air temperature measurements. It was the ninth warmest year in the period of instrumental measurements, which extends back to 1880. The nine warmest years all occur within the eleven-year period 1998-2008.

there…that is what it says at the link you quoted from…that 2008 was the coolest of the last 9 but the warmest since 1880

i know this is good and bad news no matter what but you complanin about CTV and other news outlets for being partisan yet you are no better..although this is not a news site

  • It’s to the point, where we should just ignore the stupid, and I mean that seriously. Anybody who actually sees snow outside their window, or points to unusual snowfall in southern locales as evidence that global warming is a hoax, is a complete and utter ignorant fool, that has NO understanding of the dynamics or the general evidence. You point to ice melting, they find some rogue study on solar cycles, no matter the mountain of evidence, there is some marginal information to support their delusions. Mainstream society and science have moved on, the people that inhabit places like SDA are the equivalent of some wigged out cult.
