No class.

Not only is he one of the most partisan prime ministers in our history, but he’s also one of the most classless:

The prime minister had some uncharacteristically blunt words Friday for a carbon tax proposal by Stephane Dion’s Liberals, saying it would “screw” the country… “(The carbon tax plan) is like the national energy program in the sense that the national energy program was designed to screw the West and really damage the energy sector – and this will do those things,” Harper told a small crowd in Saskatoon. “This is different in that this will actually screw everybody across the country.”

Harper has demeaned the House of Commons with his hyper-partisanship and slurs of people (Navdeep Bains as an example) which his Conservative Party has followed lockstep in, and this particular speech demeans the office of the Prime Minister with this behaviour.

On the other hand, I think this type of angry hostile speech shows that Harper and his Cons. are extremely worried about this plan. They already have no credibility amongst the public with regards to being serious on the environment, and so lacking a clear alternative, their plan is to attack, attack, attack and hope that enough mud sticks that the public won’t like this plan either. We’ll see, but I fell that when the Prime Minister and his pit bulls resort to this type of classless, extreme attacks, it’s not going to sway and persuade a lot of people. It’s red meat for his base (as the oil-patch mascot “a tax on everything” ad was), but it likely will do little to sway those not already in the Cons. camp.

  • Ah yes, nothing like the classy Trudeau, eh? With his “fuddle duddle”, and “if you don’t stop that I’ll kick your ass”.

    You stay classy, Libs!

Harper should have said “meeched” instead.
“Meech” became a verb in NFLD after 1987.
To be “meeched” means to be “screwed”.
“You meeched me”, or “I just got meeched”
“are you trying to meech the country?”

Iggy thinks Dion’s shift will screw every, equally:

”Mr. Ignatieff accused him of trading on old grievances, arguing that the Liberals have acknowledged
    the NEP was a mistake
    – and mischievously noted that Mr. Harper’s accusation that the carbon tax would “screw everybody in the country” is a backhanded acknowledgment that it is equitable from region to region.”

Ok next time Harper should say ear muffs before he says this dumb plan will screw Canada.

What are you 12 years old?

There are absolutely no GHG reduction targets within the Dion Green Shift plan. The plan is specific on yearly carbon taxation levels of $10/tonne/year over 4 years, taking carbon cost from $10/tonne to $40/tonne.

As the Green Shift plan stands now, reduction of GHGs is entirely voluntary, with only the extra cost to be mitigated. The rich will have no trouble paying the penalty, but the poor will be caught in the crunch as the cost of carbon escalates from $10/tonne to $40/tonne.

I believe there is something drastically wrong with Dion’s Green Shift plan on this basis.

It’s f*e*a*r talking – he’s scared ‘shiftless’ that he’s going to have to fight an election on something he doesn’t believe in.

  • Frankly Canadian

I can not for the life of me understand why the huge exaggeration regarding the rise in fuel cost, if anyone thinks the oil companies are not going to continue to raise prices well beyond that amount, they are the real crazy people here! Please everyone for the sake our children, our neighbors, and our own satisfaction; SAVE THE PLANET NOW !!! Tell everyone !!!

Gee, I read Babylonian’s (or should I say Mr Harper’s . . . I recognize that “tone” anywhere) first comment and certainly didn’t see any meat to address.

But, gee, economist (real ones, not Harper “that’s just crazy” economist) seem to be on board with a carbon tax as being an excellent way to green the modern economies of the world and to ease the dependence on polluting energies.

And a surprising number of right-leaning think-tanks, such as the American Enterprise Institute in Washington, DC, commend the concept as well.

And then there are those flourishing countries who adopted carbon pricing in the 90s and have reduced their carbon emissions while maintaining or extending their quality of life.

But, hey, just keep screeching and cussing if it makes you feel good.

You still haven’t addressed the meat and potatoes, Harper was accurate, I am not even saying that because he is an economist, any joe 1-pack can tell you……….this will screw up the country.

sorry, I thought martin asked the question about loving this country.

  • Ottlib

Actually Babs it was a National Post reporter that asked Stephen Harper the “love your country” question.

It was a softball lobbed by a friendly journalist at Stephen Harper and he dropped it.

As for the Liberal attack ads you make a good point. But I will also point out that those attacks contributed to the Liberal loss.

That should be an example to Conservatives that going over the top is counter-productive. However, if they do not want to take that lesson to heart I can live with that.

Was it classy when liberals made an ad saying Harper would put the military in the streets? (for the record, the libs did that during the FLQ crisis)

Was it classy when Paul Martin asked Stepehen Harper “Do you love your country???”

This thing will raise the cost of virtually everything, and what the Fu*k are canadians going to do, heat their houses with some magical dog $hit that doesn’t liberate C02 during combustion? Give me a break, your George Bush style utopian fantasies will screw up this whole country. If this thing goes though, should the libs form a government, you will see riots and unimaginable civil upheaval because no one can afford to heat their houses, flush their toilets, drive/bus to work, etc, etc.

It’s going to be really fun watching the liberal socio-whores in dowtown Toronto pay for increased ridership and taxi fee’s, and goodness help them when they fly to new york with the cost of Jet fuel. This will screw the whole country. I am willing to bet that the west will seperate if this goes through. Will truly ruin the country.
