An open question for Heather Stilwell:

Maybe I should mention who Heather Stilwell is first before I ask the question of her. She’s the school trustee in Surrey, BC trying to either get Al Gore’s documentary on global warming and climate change banned from being viewed in Surrey public schools, or at least to also offer an “alternative theory” to global warming showed; which for the dwindling few members of the Flat-Earth Society would be the documentary “The Global Warming Swindle”. We also find out that she’s a co-founder of the Christian Heritage Party – which according to its own website, wants to govern Canada according to biblical teachings.

I’d like to remind Ms. Stilwell that the Bible says humanity are to be caretakers and stewards of this earth. What I’d like to know is what she actually objects to in Al Gore’s “An Inconvenient Truth” documentary. Is she claiming that the science on this is wrong – that humanity isn’t causing climate change, or global warming? Are putting restrictions and environmental regulations on corporations and companies in an attempt to cut down on their pollution emissions somehow against the teachings that Stilwell and the CHP adhere to? Did unfettered damn-the-consequences business practises get a blessing in the Bible I missed?

I’d like to hear what her specific beef is with the movie.

UPDATE: Ok.. I think I’ve found her beef – apparently it’s the fact that Al Gore made it:

“I am not sure. I mean I see evidence. I think there is climate change, there’s no question about that. Whether what Al Gore says about it is the truth, I have questions.”

Ok Heather, how about the other overwhelming majority of scientists that agree with Al’s conclusions? Hmm.. that probably wouldn’t appeal to her either – she doesn’t like scientists too much, from the looks of it.

How about what Archbishop Desmond Tutu has to say:

human beings have been created in the image of God and are…thus God’s representatives, and so must hold this dominion not ruthlessly, aggressively exploitatively, but as God would hold dominion, caringly, lovingly and compassionately. For believers, concern for the environment is a religious obligation… we must handle the environment with care, with reverence, tenderly. Or we are doomed.

I’ll eagerly await to hear Ms. Stillwell’s rationale on how Al Gore being the messenger is the reason she doesnt want this film shown in Surrey schools, when it isn’t just Al Gore saying what is being said about climate change.

  • If you don’t think emissions from vehicles are dangerous pollutants, go to the garage, shut the door, and turn on the car. Let us know how that works out for you.

Last night on the Colbert Report there was a piece on a poor college student who was forced to watch “An Inconvenient Truth”. It is available on video on the website.

    Oldschool,
I though I already set you straight on science but there you go again Oldschool, regurgitatiing all the now proven false assertions. Bury your head in the sand if you want. Don’t prepare, don’t do anything, just don’t expect anyone to save your ass if you need assistance because your homes under water or you are dying of heat stroke.

Instead of paying attentio to 8 old fogies who can’t come to terms with modern science why not pay attention to the thousands that recognize global warming is a fact which is a fact.

Do you belive the world to be flat? Do you believe in plate tectonics? Just a few questions to gauge at what point you stopped learning anything new. Like I have repeated over and over, go to a new school. A couple earth science courses will fix the propaganda you have wholeheartedly bought into.

CO2 is not a pollutant. It exists in the earth’s atmosphere and every blade of grass and every great tree is utterly dependent upon it. In that regard, other than the oxygen on which all living creatures depend, CO2 is the second most essential gas for its ability to harness the energy of the sun and, through photosynthesis, maintain every form of vegetation on earth.
What is the most significant greenhouse gas, accounting for an estimated 95% of the earth’s greenhouse effect? It is water vapor. Its origin is 99.999% natural. If you wondered where the snow goes when it melts, it becomes for a time, water vapor. The vast percentage of the earth’s surface is water!

John A. Charles, Jr., president of the Cascade Policy Institute, notes that, “emissions of hydrocarbons from cars and trucks in the U.S. have fallen 99.3% on a per-mile basis since 1968, and carbon monoxide emissions have declined by 96 percent.” We already have clean air and this has occurred despite increased motor vehicle and energy use.

Contrast that with a U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization report that the global livestock sector is responsible for a higher share of greenhouse gas emissions than transport. According to the report, livestock account for 9% of anthropogenic CO2 emissions, 37% of methane emissions, 64% of ammonia emissions, and 65% of global nitrous oxide.

You converts to Al’s religion need to get educated.
Why won’t Al join in the debate? Cause he’d get smoked.

Last March, the prestigious New York debating society Intelligence Squared sponsored a debate on global warming. On the alarmist side of the debate were the Union of Concerned Scientists Brenda Ekwurzel, NASA climate modeler Gavin Schmidt and University of California oceanographer Richard C. J. Somerville.

The skeptical view of global warming alarmism was presented by Massachusetts Institute of Technology meteorologist Richard S. Lindzen, University of London bio-geographer Philip Stott, and “State of Fear” author Michael Crichton, who is also a Harvard-trained physician and an instructor at Cambridge University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

A pre-debate poll indicated that, by 2-to-1 (57 percent to 29 percent, with 14 percent undecided), the audience believed that manmade global warming was a crisis. But in the post-debate poll, the audience reversed its pre-debate views Ñ the ranks of the skeptics swelled to 46 percent, the believers plummeted to 42 percent and the undecided declined slightly to 12 percent. That’s the power of debate.

Gore nor Suzuki are climate scientists! They are presenters!…..And making a lot of money; which of course, is the purpose of the exercise. They don’t care about the environment……anymore than a TV evangelist cares whether he heals your herpes as long as you contribute to the collection plate;…. in Gore/Suzuki’s case the ‘donate’ button on a web site.

I am no Paul Watson [co-founder of Greenpeace] fan, but in a moment of rare truth, when asked by a reporter what made Greenpeace so successful, he replied:

“It doesn’t matter what is true, it only matters what people believe is true…. You are what the media define you to be. Greenpeace became a myth and fund generating machine.” (“Forbes”, Nov. 1991)

All scientists agree . . that is patent nonsense.
    Here’s what a few real scientists though of Al’s movie . . .
Dr. Chris de Freitas, climate scientist, associate professor, University of Auckland, New Zealand: ”I can assure Mr. Gore that no one from the South Pacific islands have fled to New Zealand because of rising seas. In fact, if Gore consults the data, he will see it shows sea level falling in some parts of the Pacific.”

Dr. Nils-Axel Mörner, emeritus professor of paleogeophysics & geodynamics, Stockholm University, Sweden: “We find no alarming sea level rise going on, in the Maldives, Tovalu, Venice, the Persian Gulf and even satellite altimetry if applied properly.”

Dr. Paul Reiter, Professor – Institut Pasteur, Unit of Insects and Infectious Diseases, Paris, France, comments on Gore’s belief that Nairobi and Harare were founded just above the mosquito line to avoid malaria and how the mosquitoes are now moving to higher altitudes: “Gore is completely wrong here – malaria has been documented at an altitude 2500 m – Nairobi and Harare are at altitudes of about 1500 m. The new altitudes of malaria are lower than those recorded 100 years ago. None of the “30 so called new diseases” Gore references are attributable to global warming, none.”

Dr. Mitchell Taylor, Manager, Wildlife Research Section, Department of Environment, Igloolik, Nunavut, Canada: “Our information is that 7 of 13 populations of polar bears in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago (more than half the world’s estimated total) are either stable, or increasing …. Of the three that appear to be declining, only one has been shown to be affected by climate change. No one can say with certainty that climate change has not affected these other populations, but it is also true that we have no information to suggest that it has.”

Dr. Petr Chylek, adjunct professor, Dept. of Physics and Atmospheric Science, Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada: “Mr. Gore suggests that Greenland melt area increased considerably between 1992 and 2005. But 1992 was exceptionally cold in Greenland and the melt area of ice sheet was exceptionally low due to the cooling caused by volcanic dust emitted from Mt. Pinatubo. If, instead of 1992, Gore had chosen for comparison the year 1991, one in which the melt area was 1% higher than in 2005, he would have to conclude that the ice sheet melt area is shrinking and that perhaps a new ice age is just around the corner.”

Dr. Gary D. Sharp, Center for Climate/Ocean Resources Study, Salinas, California: “The oceans are now heading into one of their periodic phases of cooling. … Modest changes in temperature are not about to wipe them [coral] out. Neither will increased carbon dioxide, which is a fundamental chemical building block that allows coral reefs to exist at all.”

Dr. R. M. Carter, professor, Marine Geophysical Laboratory, James Cook University, Townsville, Australia: “Both the Antarctic and Greenland ice caps are thickening. The temperature at the South Pole has declined by more than 1 degree C since 1950. And the area of sea-ice around the continent has increased over the last 20 years.”

Dr./Cdr. M. R. Morgan, FRMS, formerly advisor to the World Meteorological Organization/climatology research scientist at University of Exeter, U.K.: “From data published by the Canadian Ice Service there has been no precipitous drop off in the amount or thickness of the ice cap since 1970 when reliable over-all coverage became available for the Canadian Arctic.”

Rob Scagel, M.Sc., forest microclimate specialist, Pacific Phytometric Consultants, Surrey, British Colombia, Canada comments on Gore’s belief that the Mountain Pine Beetle (MPB) is an “invasive exotic species” that has become a plague due to fewer days of frost: “The MPB is a species native to this part of North America and is always present. The MPB epidemic started as comparatively small outbreaks and through forest management inaction got completely out of hand.”

Heather did not seek to ban Al’s movie . . . whe only wanted the other side of thedebate to be represented as well.
