The 22 Days of Harper’s Anti-Environment/Anti-Kyoto Quotes – Day 9

A short but definitely not sweet quote from Stephen Harper today, in our continuing saga of The 22 Days of Harper’s Anti-Environment/Anti-Kyoto Quotes.

“Carbon dioxide is not a pollutant.” (Stephen Harper, Hansard, October 11, 2002)

In the natural world it isnt.. but it certainly is when man-made emissions are causing the natural system to overloaded with it – turning it into a greenhouse gas and a primary cause of global warming.

You know, I also think maybe Stevie was trying to say because its a naturally occurring substance, that means it can’t be a pollutant. Well, Ozone is a natural substance as well Stevie, but industries release that too, and its a primary cause of the smog and air pollution you say Kyoto doesn’t fight and that you wish to with your Clean Air Act. So does that mean ozone isnt a pollutant either? Nice try.

Stay tuned for Day 10 quotes tomorrow!!! 🙂

I do not think so. On this one I believe Mr. Harper is exactly right. We do not have a public policy of reducing CO2 because it is a pollutant. The confusion that results from jamming pollution and global warming together by amendments to the CEPA is just one of the things one wants to avoid. We wish to reduce CO2 emissions because of their contribution to global warming. This leads to policies and crisis planning in the one case that we do not have in the other, and indeed, confusing the two helps out the whining about how we just can’t do all this, as well. Of course Mr. Harper may or may not realize all this, but why assist.
