New UN Study refutes skeptics: Global Warming is man-made and its real

I hope Stephen Harper and most of his supporters read this in the paper today:

A major new United Nations report shows global scientists are more convinced than ever that human activity is causing climate change…Rebutting one of the main arguments of climate change skeptics, it says observations of temperature increases and shrinking ice cover, “support the conclusion that it is extremely unlikely that global climate change of the past 50 years” was caused by solar flares or other natural events.

This study took in the input of 2000 scientists who reached this conclusion. The Star declares that it should “all but end the debate over whether human activity causes global warming or not.. and it will urge governments and industry to stop ignoring the problem and deal with it.

Stephen Harper should be on that list of people it urges to stop denying reality and deal with the problem… regardless of what “Big Oil” yells about.

  • Thankee fer that elucidatin’ law, KC. I bow t’ yer knowledge.

Here’s the story in a nutshell. Most scientists are sayin’ there’s man-made climate change. They mostly agree on why an’ they identified some o’ the biggest ways man is killin’ ol’ Mother Earth. Up til a couplafew days ago, yer bossman Harpoon was swimmin’ upstream with a few scientists an’ a few lobbyists bought an’ paid fer by the ones who stand t’ gain on continued reliance on fossil fuel over-consumption.

Harper’s idol, George Bush has got his ear t’ the ground. Back last summer over in Yerp when he was givin’ Angela Merkel a neck rub, Dubya made a statement where he accepted the science o’ man-made global warmin’/climate change. He weren’t walkin’ the walk much but now with the polar bear thing, Bush is signin’ on t’ science.

These guys is polyticians t’ the core. They want one thing — yer vote. They’ll say jest ’bout any flip-floppin’ thing they think the publick wants t’ hear.

  • JimBobby,

“I donít know. Is that right? Why should we assume that this is so? In places like the Great Lakes basin, pollutants are concentrated.” Cause that’s what gases do Graham’s Law…the pollutants you’re talking about are much denser particles than CO2…That’s why they’re visible (Smog), they don’t diffuse as easily.

“Are you suggesting that these scientists are incorrect in all those parts of the article that didnít ďstand outĒ like the Antarctic anomaly?” Did I suggest it, I just find the Antarctica annomoly it curious.

“Get the memo, KC. Harpoonís turned íround. If yer gonna keep supportiní the Conservative Party, yer gonna hafta get useta bendiní with the publick opinion polls. Greenís in.” … Good one…….

..And the oilsands in Alberta are the biggest contributor today to Canada’s Greenhouse Gas Emissions.. (you know, those “so-called” greenhouse gases Harper likes to call them).

  • Whooee! Funny how the part o’ the Star article that “stood out” t’ KC was the part where he thinks he might find the teensiest chink in the otherwise impenetrable armour of scientific evidence. KC asks — “Since CO2, as gas, would diffuse throughout the atmosphere, right?”

I don’t know. Is that right? Why should we assume that this is so? In places like the Great Lakes basin, pollutants are concentrated. Why would CO2 be evenly dispersed? Are you suggesting that these scientists are incorrect in all those parts of the article that didn’t “stand out” like the Antarctic anomaly?

Get the memo, KC. Harpoon’s turned ’round. If yer gonna keep supportin’ the Conservative Party, yer gonna hafta get useta bendin’ with the publick opinion polls. Green’s in.

An’ how ’bout that extra equalization money yer boss is shellin’ out t’ curry favour in Q-beck? He might even hafta take away the $5.6 billion a year in tax credits the gummint gives t’ the Alberty oil patch.

  • “What, are you trying to suggest that cows and such are the cause of global warming, Kitchener Conservative?”

Clearly not, but don’t you find it curious that we are told the world is warming, yet Antarctica is not. Wouldn’t it be subject to the same warming effects of GHGs as the rest of the world? How do you reconcile that discrepancy? I haven’t heard any explanation for it, maybe you have?

You’re comments are interesting especially the “Big Oil” one, since power generation is the top producer of GHGs.

  • What, are you trying to suggest that cows and such are the cause of global warming, Kitchener Conservative?

You’re going to base your thinly-held Conservative hope on trying to prove Global Warming isn’t real because of Antarctica? (which still has its own problems other then global warming by the way; the CFC ban is only slowing the rate at which the Van Allen radiation belt is getting a hole eaten thru it and allowing UV radiation and other harmful things through.. or have you forgotten about that).

The rate of CO2 and other global warming gases injected into the atmosphere since the start of the Industrial Revolution are rising steadily,† yet you discount that as being any factor? Did so many more cows get born to emit methane then I was aware of?

You guys need to get a grip. Global warming and “so-called” greenhouse gases are real† (and not “so-called”),† and its about time folks like you and Stephen Harper took some responsibility as being part of the Earth’s stewards, rather then worry about whether or not dealing with the problem will remove a few bucks of profit off of multi-national corporations like Big Oil.

  • One thing stood out in the star article, the UN report says “All the continents except Antarctica have warmed during the past half-century, with the biggest impacts in Canada’s Arctic and other northern regions”, this needs further explanation of why would be.

If the world is indeed warming because of increaed CO2 levels, then why is Antarctica not warming as well?

Since CO2, as gas, would diffuse throughout the atmosphere, right? Scientists say that CO2 [GHGs] trap heat, which contributes to climate change. There is one difference I can see, there is no significant life present on Antartica except scientists and a small number of other animals.

Don’t you think that discrepancy needs to be explained?

  • Whooee! Good dialect, BillyG. I’m with yer thing ’bout the Grits talkin’ the talk but not walkin’ the walk on Kyoto. It’s soundin’ more’n’more like Harpoon’s buyin’ inta Kyoto an’ his minority position means he’s gonna hafta either at least try t’ re-commit t’ Kyoto or else face the voters — most o’ whom want Canadee t’ work towards Kyoto targets, even if we can’t meet ’em.

I reckon it boils down t’ who you gonna trust. I don’t trust any o’ the CPoC, LPC or NDP. I ain’t in Q-beck so it don’t matter if I trust the BQ on the environment file or not.

I don’t buy Harpoon’s conversion on the road t’ Damascus. I reckon he sees votes in actin’ green but I ain’t convinced he’s turned ’round — ‘specially when he got climate change denyin’ cheerleaders like BillyG still rootin’ fer his team.

Sorry Scotty, but yer GrittyBoys din’t do a good job when they was callin’ the shots. You don’t need me tellin’ that when every Boogin’ Tory an’ every Tory minister’s been sayin’ it every time they open their yaps.

The Dippers is friends o’ the dirtiest industries. They talk a good talk but they been in power in BC an’ Sasky an’ they made a mess o’ ol’ Mother Earth with concessions t’ the loggin’ an’ energy industries.

Fer folks who’s wantin’ the best gummint fer ol’ Mother Earth, take a good look at the Greenies. Mebbe the Greenies won’t elect a MP but if enuff votes go their way, the do-nuthin’s in the other parties’ll want them votes an’ they’ll do green things t’ get ’em.

    Billg,
You still haven’t answered me ever (10 requests now) about how your Noah’s Ark theory for cities is going.

    That bad, eh?

Actually, some of them go even farther then that..some of the fundamentalists in the US believe that if we let the world go to hell in a handbasket, it will speed up the Second Coming.

Now, I’m a Christian as well.. but I’m no fundamentalist, and I fundamentally disagree with them on that interpretation.

If yer inta science den yu must be inta histry two!! Its not the harp yooz guys gotta worry bout..its the guys before who believed in dat der Koyoto and let things get worse….unless of course sum idjits are willin’ to be fueled twice!!! Kinda like lettin dat fox in da hen house and scractin’ yur head wunderin’ where all du hens went!! Idjits a folks who get scammed once and let it happen ‘gain!! Whiddle away amongst yorsel’s!!

  • Whooee! ScottyMan, I reckon mebbe you don’t unnerstand faith. The climate change deniers don’t give a rat’s ass what a bunch egghead scientists say. God made the world an’ God’ll save it from destruction. Puny man can’t really have any effect on God’s wonderous creation. It’s jest human pride — hubris — that makes these here scientists think man’s powerful enuff t’ rend assunder what God has put together.

Facts don’t count. Votes do count, though. Yer never gonna convince these idjits with science. They can be convinced t’ take effective action if they figger it’ll get ’em more votes.
