Did you know that females are birth-giving machines?

Courtesy of Desi/Diane at her site, comes this charming quote from the Japanese Health Minister:

“The number of women between the ages of 15 and 50 is fixed. The number of birth-giving machines (and) devices is fixed, so all we can ask is that they do their best per head,” Health, Labor and Welfare Minister Hakuo Yanagisawa said in a speech Saturday, the Asahi and Mainichi newspapers reported.

…which just goes to prove Bush and his Cabinet aren’t the only people in government trying to bring back the 1800’s.

  • No Tim, you’re right on this one. I’m insulted on behalf of infertile couples, who get no financial support from the Japanese government, and of course, men are half the issue for both biological and cultural reasons. Lack of daycare, sexist society, minimal job protection, costs a mint to get pregnant, yet the Japanese government blames women. Even if he cleaned up his phrasing, his whole argument is poorly thought out.
Of course, I’m waiting for this to come up in Canada. We’re already facing a demographic disaster, and sooner or later someone will make a speech like this, and if they only blame women, but refuse to support those who want kids, well, I for one will go nuclear on them.

  • Actually, in addition to being insulting, he’s wrong. Japan makes it very difficult for immigrants to become citizens. If Mr. Yanagisawa wants more “birth-giving machines”, it’s easy. Allow the Filipino, Korean and Chinese guest workers to become citizens. Instant pension fund top-up.

Gag! The more I read and explore, the more I question what year I am living in.

What a dichotemy Japan is. So pro/re/gressive.

Dan.. not if you read Desi’s blogentry – he apparently has already tried apologizing for the remark, and is getting a ton of criticism at home. Idiocy is the same everywhere, regardless of how it’s translated.

I want to mod this as funny. :em20:
But I am sure lots of women are less than amused.
It seems in Japan, men are not require as part of the process, perhaps I am reading too much into this. :em42:

Well that really gets the nuts and bolts of it doesn’t it?

I think someone needs an introduction to the cluebat™ :em41:
